This book comes out of a major research project sponsored by the German Historical Institute the Heidelburg Center for American Studies and Vassar College entitled "The Civil Rights Struggle African American GIs and Germany." This project was the 2009 recipient of the NAACP's Julius E. Williams Distinguished Community Service Award.
