American Colonial: Puritan Simplicity to Georgian Grace Book

The history and development of the American home in the colonial period starts with the simple structures built as farm houses in Massachusetts and ends with the grand mansions of plantation owners in Virginia. Wendell Garrett has created a beautiful history of this development with the publication of American Colonial. The book is beautifully written and is filled with stunning photographs by Paul Rocheleau. David Larkin, the author of the equally beautiful Farm, was responsible for the design. The talents of the collaborators have resulted in a meticulous and authoritative account of the finest surviving colonial building on the east coast of the United States. The three main sections of the book deal with New England, The Middle Colonies around New York, and the Southern Colonies. The histories of the beautiful homes in these areas and the people who lived in them are recorded. Garrett has also recorded the details of restorations and placed each dwelling in its social, political, and historical context. Many of the buildings have recently been perfectly restored and are filled with period furniture, rugs, and works of art that offer a wealth of information on how these homes were lived in. This is a fantastic book that really captures the essence and beauty of these fine properties.Read More
