An Atheist's Testament Book
In an Atheist s Testament, Bernard Sarachek s meditation on his atheism, the author declares that since he was in his twenties he has based his atheistic belief on faith alone. He had never thoroughly examined the roots of his disbelief in a God or Supreme Being. However, the rise of religious fundamentalism in the U.S. forced him to finally take a close look at his disbelief. In writing this book, his explorations brought to light inconsistencies and absurdities of organized religion. Born into a modestly observant Jewish family, he never had a strong religious upbringing. The closest he came to having a religious experience, he relates, is when he allowed a Baptist minister to pray over him at a religious revival. Much of An Atheist s Testament is a critique of the religious right and mainstream religions, but that is part of the atheist s dilemma. He or she must react to the prevailing religious winds in society. Also part of the atheist s dilemma is the social isolation that results for the disbeliever. An atheist must live in a religious world. There are no answers or ultimate truths for atheists. Thus they are free from the need to explain everything in the universe. But they must posses the courage to take responsibility for themselves. There really is no one else to do it for them.Read More
