This book provides a lucid and fascinating account of the development of photographic apparatus from the beginning of photography, in 1839, to the present day. Over 600 drawings (almost half in color) are used to demonstrate not only the often beautiful exteriors of the cameras, but also the interiors and working parts. The ready use of cutaway views to explain the structure and function of the cameras has added an extra dimension to the book. Cameras are divided into 15 main classes, and the development of each is discussed chronologically, changes in camera design being related to the developments in photography which influenced them. Accuracy in dating the introduction of new cameras, although not always easy, or even possible, to achieve, is extremely important in a study of this sort.
