Much of the history of the Clydeside region has been written from the point of view of shipbuilding, engineering and worker radicalizm. According to some commentators, collective action amongst workers on Clydeside took the area to the brink of revolution in the 1917-1920 period. This book examines a wide range of Clydeside industries over the 1870-1920 period. In so doing the book - which bridges the disciplines of business history, labour history, and economic and social history of employers encompasses small as well as large-scale capital, draws upon a wide range of primary source material located within the Clydeside region and beyond, and illustrates how capitalists regulated trade, dealt collectively with labour management problems, and contributed to regional and national politics.
