Commercial Robbery Book
There are still relatively few books that focus on specific offences, and few that incorporate offenders' perspectives. This book does both and is based on interviews with 341 robbers of commercial premises. Commercial Robbery addresses a range of key criminological questions including: why offenders choose to commit armed robbery? what sort of planning is involved and how do they choose their targets? what do offenders think about common security measures and how do they get around them? what do robbers consider when the weigh up the chances of getting caught and how do offenders view the prospect of imprisonment? why do robbers carry weapons and when would they use them? This new book, based on original research, offers a unique insight into the ways robbers think and behave. The author argues that approaches to crime prevention are often flawed because they have failed to take account of offenders' perspectives, and that the failure to understand the criminal event has distracted theorists from some key issues. Moreover, for the first time, literature from the study of security management and from the world of crime prevention, are reviewed within one book. The findings suggest that the vast majority of robbers know what they are doing and why and most expect to get away with it. As a result the author concludes by offering a revised classification of situational crime prevention techniques based on his own and a range of other findings.Read More
