Crisis on Infinite Earth was a massive 12-comic attempt by DC to clean up its continuity and there really hasn't been anything like it since, in terms of sheer scale, scope and ramifications on the industry itself. It paved the way for more crossovers, team-ups and galaxy spanning "events" across the whole comics genre. The heroes must face and battle an entity from the anti-matter world that is intent on destroying Earth and all its alternate incarnations, wiping out billions on lives in the process. During the course of the storyline, characters died, new heroes were born and by the end, several fresh starts were ready and waiting for some of the company's key characters. The story itself is slightly contrived but does the job it is supposed to do and Wolfman and Perez do a superb job of bringing together and finding a role for almost every character DC comics has ever published (even Sgt. Rock gets a look in!). The glorious cover art by George Perez gives newcomers little doubt as to who bites the bullet (though Wonder Woman's two panel "death" scene seems hardly worthy of her status as one of DC's big three, given Supergirl's wonderfully overwraught death at the hands of The Monitor).
