Domestic Painting in Fifteenth Century Florence: The Role of the Cassone within the Home Book

This book explores the role in which painted furnishings played for the fifteenth century family in Florence. The commissioning of extravagant homes and furnishings became increasingly popular in Florence at this time and reflected the social, political and financial status of the family who commissioned them. In order to illustrate the importance of commissioning certain furnishings and paintings within the home, this book places a focus on the use of illustrations such as the Garden of Love, Susanna and the Elders and Cupid and Psyche on cassone panels within the home. By focussing on illustrations that were represented on wedding chests, I have been able to look at a functional piece of furniture that held a particularly important role within the domestic environment during the fifteenth century because of the role it played in the wedding ceremony and its location within newly married couple's bedroom.Read More
