Drawing for Illustration Book
MR. LAMB has unusually wide qualifications for writing on drawing for illustration. He is not only a painter, an author, and an illustrator of standing; he also works freely as a typographer, lithographer, and engraver on wood or metal. He has experience of every field of practice covered by this book. He designed the binding of the Bible used at the Coronation, and his LI postage stamp of this reign was recently judged by an international jury to be the most beautiful in the world. He is on the staff of the Slade School of Fine Art, has served on the art panel of the Arts Council, and on the Council of Industrial Design. He is a Past President of the Society of Industrial Artists. He has been for more than seven years the Specialist Assessor in Illustration to the Ministry of Education for the National Diploma in Design examinations; and he is an external examiner to the faculty of Fine Art of Reading University for their final Degree.Following his successful Preparation for Painting, this book is again primarily for the student, but it will also be of help and interest to the experienced practitioner. Based on thirty years' experience of both the inside and outside of publishing, it is an authoritative statement of the illustrator's problems in his essential dealings with authors, publishers, block-makers, and printers. It brings for the first time under one cover the theoretical, contractual, and technical aspects of illustration in books, magazines, and advertisements. Both the artist and those who use his work will here find what each needs from the other. The earlier chapters discuss the pictorial imagination, the training of the illustrator, and his specific problems. The later chapters explain lucidly and without technical jargon all the essential details for the artist of the various processes of printing and reproduction. The 24 pages of plates and more than 60 text figures have been specially chosen or drawn to illustrate his argument.Read More
