English Grammer Composition and Correspondence Book

ENGLISH GRAMMAR COMPOSITION AND CORRESPONDENCE -- PREFACE TO THE SIXTH EDITION - IN combining in one text-book chapters on the elements of English Grammar and Composition with an exposition of the principles and characteristics of Business Correspondence, the authors believe that they are meeting a real need, and this belief is confirmed by the demand for yet another edition. Although it is clear that a knowledge of the rudiments of the language is essential to its correct application in business life, examiners repeatedly complain of the scant attention that has, apparently, been given by candidates to the mastery of their mother tongue. Correct grammar and a good style are as necessary in a business letter as in any other form of composition, and it is, therefore, hoped that the earlier chapters in this volume will prove of assistance to those who are mainly concerned with obtaining a knowledge of business correspondence and its kindred subjects of prkcis-writing and the drafting of reports. At the end of each chapter will be found numerous questions and exercises, many of which have been taken from examination papers set by the University of London, the Institute of Bankers, the Chartered Institute of Secretaries, and the Incorporated Secretaries Association, to all of whom acknowledgment is due and is here accorded. Acknowledgment is also made to the Controller of H. M. Stationery Office for his permission to include several extracts from Civil Service Examination Papers. The terminology adopted in the Grammatical sections is that recommended by the Joint Committee on Grammatical Terminology. M. A. P. S. E. T. September, 1936. CONTENTS 2. AP examination of the European and some of the Asiatic languages has shown that they can be divided into several groups, the members of which resemble one another because they were derived from the same original tongue. Thus English, with German, Dutch, Norwegian, Danish, etc., belongs to the Germanic group of languages. All of these tongues were ZeIo ed from a primitive language spoken in prehistoric times by the early Germanic tribes. Similarly, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, etc. called R o e c e languages, because they are derived from the speech of the Romans, are the offspring of Latin, which was one of the Italic family...Read More
