In this series an investigative approach to history is promoted through a series of projects and activities centred around a particular theme. They include observation and research, model-making and exertion of the imagination. This volume deals with castles. The role of the castle in England, Scotland and Wales is examined and its emergence and dominance as a symbol of power during the period succeeding the Norman Conquest. It includes a detailed look at motte-and-bailey castles, the development of the keep and the ambitious constructions of Edward I in Wales. Castle design and its effect on everyday living is considered and its final decline following growing internal peace and the development of powerful artillery. Later, less important fortifications such as Martello Towers and the Second World War pillboxes played their part. A series of projects and activities are provided enabling the reader to be actively involved in this study.
