Fantasy Art of the New Millennium: The Best in Fantasy and SF Art Worldwide Book

Dick Jude is art director of Internet art gallery, Fantasia Online. Fantasy Art of the New Millennium is his first book and in it he has interviewed 10 very different artists working in the fields of science fiction, fantasy and horror. The book is divided into three sections, covering artists who work with traditional paint (Alan Lee, Don Maitz, John Howe, Brom), those who combine paint with digital technology (Jim Burns, Rick Berry, Chris Moore) and those who have moved completely into "The Digital Realm" (Steve Stone, Fred Gambino, Dave McKean). Approximately 13 pages are devoted to each artist, with Jude giving each ample space to describe their approach to their work, set against reproductions not only of finished pieces, but also of sketches, photographs and works in progress. The art is reproduced to a high standard, with vibrant colours, pin-sharp clarity and fine detail, while the text is genuinely fascinating. The work ranges from traditional (though often very beautiful) book cover illustration, to more experimental art, with some surreal and disturbing pieces. Not everything here will appeal to everyone, most readers will love some of the work, being indifferent to or reacting against the remainder. Even so, the artist's words may often lead to reconsidering images we would otherwise dismiss without second thought, while the diversity of material proves the book successful in exploring the wide scope of contemporary SF and fantasy art. As such Fantasy Art of the New Millennium lives up to its own subtitle: The BEST in Fantasy and SF art worldwide. --Gary S. DalkinRead More
