ECCLESIASTES. reading the book of Ecclesiastes I have been struck with the frequent occurrence of this expression, ' Under the sun' It occurs twenty-nine times in this book of ten chapters, and is nowhere else in the Bible. 'Under the heavens' is thrice mentioned, and ' upon the earth' four times. I have met Christians who have been sadly perplexed by several expressions in this book, which seem so contradictory to other parts of the Scripture. Infidels have also exultingly brought some of its detached sentences as sanctioning their blasphemies. Legalists and Unitarians have quoted some of its precepts as proving their man-exalting and God-dishonouring doctrines. Worldly professors use its verses as a warrant for their worldliness, and an excuse for their practices. That expression, ' under the sun,' is the thread on which the whole book is crystallized. If we remember this, we shall have not the slightest difficulty in meeting infidel opposition or world- hearted profession. Solomon was the wisest aahe was the richest king, trying all that was ' under the sun.' The Holy Spirit has, in these few chapters, with divine accuracy given us his experience, and 'what can the man do that cometh after the king?'
