Excerpt: The Maltese Provincial Battalions, ' 1802-1815. To the Militia and Militia Coast Artillery succeeded the Maltese Provincial Battalions, corps which were raised in conformity with the 5th paragraph of Article X. of the Treaty of Amiens (March 27, 1802). Instructions were received from England to enlist 2000 men, natives of Malta and of Gozo, for garrison duty in these islands.
