Excerpt: The Maltese Provincial Battalions, ' 1802-1815. To the Militia and Militia Coast Artillery succeeded the Maltese Provincial Battalions, corps which were raised in conformity with the 5th paragraph of Article X. of the Treaty of Amiens (March 27, 1802). Instructions were received from England to enlist 2000 men, natives of Malta and of Gozo, for garrison duty in these islands. The original intention was to form them into two infantry battalions of 1000 men each, divided equally into 10 companies, the establishment and rates of pay being as follows : -- . d. 1 lieutenantxiolonel, commanding . 8 0i. d. 1 major 60 8 captains . . .
