I Was Glad: The Memoirs of Christopher Campling, Dean Emiritus of Ripon Cathedral Book
Christopher Campling is neither famous nor infamous. But in this autobiography (his eleventh published book) he has a story to tell. Born in Australia; bombed in his father's London Vicarage in 1940; his school evacuated; naval service on the lower deck of a Greek destroyer and in the ward rooms of two battle ships, in which he took part in the surrender of the Japanese at Singapore. After teaching, Oxford, and a curacy at Basingstoke he twice became a school chaplain, and once was sacked. Then vicar, rural dean, archdeacon and dean; and twenty two years in the General Synod which he hated and loved as he championed ecurnenical causes and the ordination of women. He was elected Chairman of the Open Synod Group and appointed Chairman of the Council for the Care of Churches. Christopher Campling is a dedicated husband, father and grandfather who has lived life to the full with a passion for music, sport and travel. Here is a human story in which intelligence and humour light up the frustrations and delights of twentieth century ecclesiastical and domestic life.Read More
