Icebox Book

As a journalist, radio presenter and situation comedy writer, there are many things Mark Bastable could have written about. He chose a black comedy about mad scientists and decapitation. With its one-word title, Icebox doesn't offer any clues to what lies within its pages but this soon becomes clear when the subject turns to severed heads:Oh, God, he groaned aloud. There's a head in the fridge. When Don's partner Unity meets scientific evangelist Gabriel Todd on a business trip to Boston, a chain of events are set in motion that lead to a disembodied head in the refrigerator and a game of "Happy Families". Don may seem an average "arrogant, patronising, self-satisfied thirtysomething", but even his easy-going nature is ill-equipped for the absurdity of his situation, when he meets Robert Spleen. Spleen, the CEO of the underhanded "Splendid" Corporation, is battling with Todd over his controversial theories of granting eternal life. Through a bizarre series of co-incidences, Don becomes the agent for the battle for the prized trophy between the pair. The story is quick moving with anti-climatic revelations that compel you to read more and uncover what bizarre secrets lie in store for the treacherous misfits as the escapade continues. Dry humour and thoughtful one-liners make it okay to laugh when you shouldn't and smile through every reluctant grimace. --David TruemanRead More
