Charles McClain's illuminating new study probes Chinese efforts to battle manifold discriminationin housing, employment, and educationin nineteenth-century America. Challenging the stereotypical image of a passive, insular group, McClain reveals a politically savvy population capable of mobilizing to fight mistreatment.
