Industry in Developing Countries Book
Third World industrialisation has played an important role in the reshaping of the global economy in the post war era. This book surveys this phenomenon, critically examining both the growing empirical evidence and the theoretical literature. Alternative strategies for industrialisation are assessed and the three approaches that have dominated thinking on this subject - the structuralist, the Marxist and the neo-Classical - are discussed. Industrialisation in developing countries is not a uniform process, and this book emphasises the discrepancies between the newly industrialising countries of South East Asia and the poorest countries of Africa. Given this heterogeneity, establishing appropriate criteria for assessing industrial performance in different countries is a problem, and the book pays close attention to resolving it. Finally it analyses what policy instruments are appropriate for which conditions.Read More
