James Turrell: Eclipse Book
Edited by Michael Hue-Williams. Essays by Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Robert Solso. American artist James Turrell has been working with phenomena related to light and perception since the mid-60s. His most spectacular project is Roden Crater in the Painted Desert of Arizona, a network of chambers and passages that creates the feeling of a sky devoid of limit, a dome arching over the earth, a phenomenon which Turrell calls "the other horizon." For the eclipse of the sun on August 11th, 1999, Turrell conceived two perceptual spaces: The Elliptic Ecliptic, a "Sky Space" built on a hillside facing St. Michael's Mount, and Arcus, a "Shallow Space" construction in the Newlyn Art Gallery. At the end of the eclipse, both structures were taken down, and thus this book is a vital and unique document of the last total eclipse of this century and the last one for 85 years. Included are photos by Turrell and Thomas Joshua Cooper documenting these works, as well as an audio CD specially recorded for this project with compositions by Paul Schtze.Read More
