His most spectacular project is Roden Crater in the Painted Desert of Arizona, a network of chambers and passages that creates the feeling of a sky devoid of limit, a dome arching over the earth, a phenomenon which Turrell calls "the other horizon." For the eclipse of the sun on August 11th, 1999, Turrell conceived two perceptual spaces: The Elliptic Ecliptic, a "Sky Space" built on a hillside facing St. Michael's Mount, and Arcus, a "Shallow Space" construction in the Newlyn Art Gallery.
