Jewish and Christian Apocalypses (Schweich Lectures) Book
THE BRITISH ACADEMY Jewish and Christian Apocalypses F. Crawforcl Burkitt, M. A., D. D. PREFACE I I I S book co ltainst l ctl lrec Schjrcich Lectures for 1913, printed i l llosets actl. is they n-ere dclivcrcd 1 tst November. The only ch ungc of importance is that I havc divided thc third 1, ecturc into its two constituent parts, so as to keep the specifically Christian variety of Apocalypse in a class by itself. In the T, ectures I attempted to confine myself as ui uch as possil le to mhat I believe to be the fundamei tal idea which underlies the great scries of Jewish Apoc tly ses, vi,,. the idea of the imrrtineiit tJudgement to Conre, and fitrtlrer to exhibit this Idea ill coni cxion with what I believe to be both its true historical setting m dth e 111tilnate cause of its inanifestntion. That mhich givcs the Apocnlypses vitality is the great strrlggle betveen Ileligion and Civilization, of which the Jlaccabean Alnrtyrs nre the symbol. I omit the adjectires. Rfy readers thetnsclvcs, according as they view the thing, can say between spiritual Religion aid material Civilization or between fanatical Iteligion and enlightened Civilisation,-and they will judge the Apocalypses accordingly. What 1 have addecl will be found in the separate Appei dices. These will, I hope, csl lain themselves to the s1 ecialists for whom they were pimarily written.
