John Storrs: Machine-age Modernist Book
Published to accompany an exhibition of the same name, this fully illustrated, all-color catalogue is the first examination of the work of American sculptor John Storrs (1885-1956) to appear in over twenty years. One of America's foremost modernists, Storrs produced a remarkable body of work that helped re-invigorate the then largely academic medium of sculpture. He was at the forefront of both the European and American avant-garde movements in the early twentieth century and was part of a vibrant culture that included his teacher Auguste Rodin and the members of Katherine Dreier's Societe Anonyme, such as artists Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Charles Demuth, and Joseph Stella. This catalogue gives particular emphasis to one of the most innovative phases of Storrs's work from the late 1910s to the 1930s when he was finding inspiration in the new skyscrapers and other modern buildings that he saw in New York and Chicago.Read More
