What exactly is a Larder Lad? On the evidence of the present volume, he is a red-blooded male who has been enticed by Louise Holland and Roberta Moore into donning an apron and taking up cooking for the sake of enhancing his social skills, impressing his friends and--key point--putting together romantic little suppers for two (and perhaps, if it works, a little brunch the following day). This is all as it should be, and the recipes Holland and Moore have compiled are robust, stylish and eclectic. "Grilled Marinaded Boned Leg of Lamb", "Salmon Wrapped in Filo Pastry with Ginger and Sultanas", "Monkfish Stir-Fry with Oyster Sauce" and "Bitter Orange Salad with Grand Marnier Ice-Cream" give perhaps a flavour of the kind of high points this book encourages the Larder Lad to aim for. A handful of role-model types have contributed recipes. Pete Tong's is "Spaghetti Vongole". Lennox Lewis rummages in his lunch box to give us "Jamaican Jerk Chicken". Jay Kay suggests "Creamy Poached Cod with Spicy Mash".
