Moby Dick: BBC Radio 4 Full-cast Dramatisation (BBC Radio Collection) Cassette
Looking for adventure and a new life, Ishmael, the story's narrator, decides to find work on a whaling boat. On arriving at the Massachusetts harbour to begin his search, the only bed available is already half occupied by a "cannibal" named Queequeg. Although Queequeg has limited English, a friendship forms and the two men sign up for work together aboard the Pequod under the infamous Captain Ahab. It is only when the Pequod has lost sight of land that the mysterious Captain makes his first appearance. Ahab informs the men that the Pequod is only looking for one whale--Moby Dick, the enormous white whale that bit off his leg in a previous encounter. Ahab is obsessed with the whale to the point of madness and though first mate Starbuck tries to reason with him, nothing will make him alter his course. Despite its ubiquitous salty old sea dog, "there she blows" elements, Moby Dick is something far more complex and profound than a simple tale of adventure on the high seas. It is an allegorical story that looks deep into the men's souls to examine the nature of vengeance and pose questions about spirituality. This incredibly rich audio book is a fantastic full-cast dramatisation of Herman Melville's classic novel. It features original music composed and performed by Rohan Kriwaczek and uses simultaneously beautiful and haunting whale music to great effect. The cast of actors form a convincing crew which together with the rich, gravelly voice of F Murray Abraham as Ishmael make for captivating listening. This audio is an incredible achievement on all levels. --Running time 2 hours, 55 minutes--Sarah CrawfordRead More
