Pearl Beyond Price: The Attractive Jesus Book
David Day is George Carey's daughter's father in law. That's not a reason for him to write the annual Lent Book, says the Archbishop. Instead, Day was asked because he is a competent author, preacher and good communicator. Day sets himself the task of showing us the perennial attractiveness of Jesus Christ. He does so with a simple outline of ten chapters--each one being an image of Jesus' personality and role. Each chapter concludes with questions for discussion and ideas for reflection, meditation and prayer. This makes the book an excellent resource for either group study or individual devotion during Lent. Day is indeed an excellent communicator in a classic evangelical mode. He makes good use of personal anecdote, illustrations from popular culture and references to literature, Scripture and the writings of the saints. He acknowledges the difficulties of presenting Christianity in a positive light in our society, but remains confident that many people want to find an attractive Jesus in whom to trust. At times this book lapses into an "Anglican vicar" style which is almost a parody of the genre, but for the most part Day succeeds in giving us a fresh, relevant and creative portrait of Jesus Christ. This is a book for Christians of all traditions. It is also an excellent book to give to an enquirer because it cuts through all the religion to introduce us afresh to Jesus Christ himself. --Dwight LongeneckerRead More
