Power of a Third Kind: The Western Attempt to Colonize the Global Village Book
The power of the West in general and the United States of America in particular has generally been thought of as consisting of its military might and its economic muscle; in Power of a Third Kind, Hisham M. Nazer argues that there is also that capacity to create and sustain discourse which derives from the Western development and control of the Internet and satellite news. Human rights and democracy are universally considered to be desirable and increasingly act as the basis on which economic aid is given out and yet it is the West that controls, through its global media, both how they are conceived of in the first place and how individual countries are perceived in their struggles to attain them. Nazer argues that a simple retreat from modernity into a cultivated integral identity is not an option for the non-Western nations; they will inevitably be swallowed by modernity and the West if they follow that past. What is needed is the creation of a critical discourse within the global village; it is the duty of non-Western intellectuals to arrive at a sophisticated understanding of this third kind of power and ways in which it can be used to prevent the swallowing of all identities save Western ones. -- Roz KaveneyRead More
