This is a third edition of a reference work originally written by George Underdown. The book has been revised by Ron Hirst, who has also added new material, including chapters on combustion technology, automatic systems, the protection of special hazards, and the evaluation of risk. Although essentially a practical work, the theoretical material should widen the application of the book by making the fire engineer aware of the wide range of fire and explosion hazards. At the same time it should provide a basic understanding of the techniques and equipment by which these risks can be mitigated.
