PREFACE. IT will soon be discovered, in reading the following pages, that I purpose therein not to treat of Theism, as such, but only to discuss the teaching of the advocates of Pre-organic Evolution, and pre-eminently of Mr. Spencer, in its bearing on the conception of God given us in the Bible; and not, indeed, of the entire representation of God to be found in the Bible, but only that which is more nearly allied to the implications found in the premisses from which the Agnostic conclusion is supposed to be legitimately derived.
