A new framework for initial teacher training and education is set out in 'Qualifying to teach: Professional Standards for Qualified Teacher Status and Requirements for Initial Teacher Training', published in February 2002 after a period of extensive consultation. This book intends to provide an eclectic mix of practical advice and considered perspectives in relation to the new national framework, and is of relevance to all providers and partners involved in primary ITTE. The editors have brought together a range of thoughtful and insightful contributions, addressing three elements: a constructive critique of the new standards and requirements; strategies and approaches to course design and assessment in order to meet the new requirements; and a visionary section on the purpose and future direction of ITTE.
