After all, his first wife, Ruth, is a doctor with a calm and methodical manner, whereas Lin fled the family home with her four-year-old son Theo and is pressured by these voices and visions. Soon, a battle has begun over Theo and Lin finds herself struggling for both her son and her sanity. Elizabeth McGregor is the author of several powerful novels in which the psychological conflicts of the characters are paramount. (Probably her best known book is Little White Lies, which has been televised.) Here, she achieves a remarkable balance between the sympathy the reader feels for the different characters. We may have been in this territory before, but rarely with this level of assurance. As Hitchcock did in his best films, McGregor is able to conjure suspense out of the most minute and low-key situations, and as the revelations about Lin's supposed apparitions begin to come thick and fast, even those readers who have second-guessed the author will find a wry smile playing across their lips at the realisation that McGregor has plenty more cards up her sleeve. --Barry ForshawRead More
