She's the One Book
Manager of the research library for a Manhattan-based TV station, Deanna Lindsey's life is organized and upwardly mobile with an appropriately compatible male friend. Her safe but sterile world takes a radical turn when she receives a call from the city medical examiner asking her to come to the morgue and identify the body of a woman she hasn't seen in seven years. Much to Deanna's dismay, not only is the body that of her long-absent friend, but the young white woman has appointed Deanna as the guardian of her six-year-old, multiracial daughter. City fireman Patterson Temple takes one look at the beautiful young black woman at the morgue and classifies her as too proper, classy, upscale, and high-maintenance. He's not convinced that Deanna Lindsey is the best person to take charge of newly-orphaned Jade, currently being cared for by his beloved grandmother. Deanna doesn't welcome his interference, but Patterson is determined to remain involved in Jade and Deanna's life until he's satisfied that a home with Deanna is the best possible solution for the little girl. Patterson never expects to fall in love with the uptight but vulnerable Deanna, and Deanna is stunned to find herself irresistibly drawn to the strength and compassion beneath Patterson's blunt, slightly rough exterior. Both of these wary people will have to learn to trust and open their hearts if they are to find a happy ever after together. Kitt draws a fascinating picture of the world of the heroine--an educated, proper, urban professional with limited emotional involvements--juxtaposed against the world of the hero--a blue collar fireman with the calloused but clean hands of a working man who is deeply involved in his community. As expected from this talented author, the characters are multidimensional, the urban setting right on target, the conflicts complicated, and the resolutions deeply satisfying. She's the One is quite simply one of the best contemporary romances of the year. --Lois Faye DyerRead More
