Provides an insight into the unknown world of engine workings - the rosters of the locomotive and its crew. The Southern Region of British Railways publishes these duties in book form, appearing twice a year, in the summer and the autumn. These duties follow a standard format for the Region's three divisions and have remained little known to the average railway enthusiast. The many and varied activities of steam working are described and portrayed with appropriate illustrations. From around-the-town freights to plush Pullman services, the locomotive duties are quoted together with a brief description of those of the engine driver and firemen. The reason why the various engine sheds had allocations of particular types of locomotive become apparent as the railway's operating schedules are explained.
