Stone and Sky Book
The fourth book by a young British writer, Stone & Sky is both a self- contained novel and the beginning of "The Stone Trilogy". It is a Victorian-era fantasy which begins with English biologist Jonah Lightfoot encountering American artist Annie West moments before they are caught in the eruption of the South Seas volcano Mt. Krakatoa. They find themselves in the world of Stone, trapped by an endless wall, faced with a primitive civilisation and amazed to find dragons are real. What follows has the feel of a classic English adventure yarn. For the flavour imagine a dash each of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World, William Hope-Hodgson's The Boats of the Glen Carrig--a more particular influence is probably his 1914 story "The Stone Ship"--and the novels of Sir Rider Haggard. The prose has a precise, considered voice which is a delight to read, and which is reminiscent of such fine fantasies as Robert Holdstock's Mythago Wood series or Stephen Baxter's elegant The Time Ships. Graham Edwards has a strong and sometimes bizarre imagination, which he deftly combines with a gift for crafting thrilling action and suspense sequences, topping everything with a dash of humour and an undercurrent of teasing romance. Jonah and Annie make an engaging pair, and their first adventure is a most enjoyable entertainment. The cover is by noted fantasy artist Les Edwards. --Gary S. Dalkin ENDRead More
