Author Leonardo Benevolo's classic two-volume set explores the cycle of architectural experiments that commenced in Florence in the early fifteenth century and rapidly spread throughout the world. This illustrated work opens in the 1400s with an account of the movement's founders, and continues through to the start of the eighteenth century. The relationship between the development of architecture and that of other related fields, especially the great advances in painting and sculpture, receives special attention, as do the effects of the beginnings of modern science and the general economic and social changes of the age, which makes this collection interdisciplinary in nature.
