'Rulers, Townsmen, and Bazaars: North Indian Society in the Age of British Expansion 1770-1870' (Cambridge University Press 1983): traces the evolution of north Indian towns, rural bazaars, and merchant communities and networks from the decline of Mughal dominion to the consolidation of Britain's empire in India following the 1857 'mutiny'. Origins of Nationality in South Asia: Patriotism and Ethical Government in the Making of Modern India (Oxford University Press 1998): deals with the ideological and social background of India's regional and pan-Indian nationalist movements that emerged at the end of the nineteenth century.Read More
