The Crow - Clash by Night Book
Clash by Nightis another addition to the growing The Crow series of books written by authors other than the creator himself, James O'Barr. This one was penned by Chet Williamson, who had also done the novelisation of the second Crow film, as well as a short story for the anthology The Crow: Shattered Lives and Broken Dreams. The plot once again revolves around revenge. The Crow, mystically empowered to bring back the souls of the wronged dead, resurrects Amy Carlisle, killed in the day-care centre she owned, by a bomb intended for a visiting senator. She is brought back to avenge the deaths of 10 children killed in the blast. She must track down those responsible for the killing, an extremists white Christian militia group. There's a final, and inevitable, showdown. In this book, the Crow takes on racists, anti-Semitics, homophobes, misogynists and extreme politics--all rolled into one group called the Sons of a Free America. All very noble, but a bit hard going for what is essentially a horror/fantasy novel. Amy's disgust in the extremophiles is well portrayed, but it's hammered home over and over and over again. After a while, the constant extremist statements do start to sound the same. Comparing this to the emotions of the love lost and the anger felt by the lead character in Poppy Z. Brite's novel, The Crow: The Lazarus Heart, Clash by night seems somewhat empty and repetitive. --Chris van SheltengaRead More
