You will be hard pressed to find a more comprehensive pregnancy and child-care book than this. At 640 pages of straight text, uncluttered by drawings or photographs, it will become a bible to be often consulted by those parents who like to get their teeth into a little bit more in- depth information than is usually offered by standard pregnancy books. Despite being wordy, the style is not dense; it remains very readable and can be read from start to finish--take a journey through your child's conception and early years--or dipped into using the index. This book deals very much with the facts, and is valuable because of this. However, if you want to find out about the emotional side of pregnancy, or to have a more gentle overview, you could try Miriam Stoppard's New Parent; for a practical parent's guide try Penelope Leach's Your Baby and Child. Nevertheless, this book is intensely interesting: a particular highlight is the table format into which child development milestones have been grouped, which form an easily consulted time-line reference to areas such as growth in play skills, motor skills, sight and so forth, which prove extremely useful for quick dips to find out where your child is at.
