The Houses of McKim, Mead & White Book

McKim, Mead and White were one of America's most prolific architects of substantial public and institutional buildings. Based in New York, they created landmarks like the Boston Public Library, and the campus of Columbia University. They also re- designed the White House. This book is the first to examine and document their extra-ordinary residential homes on the East Coast. These homes were built for the powerful and wealthy industrialists, philanthropists, and nouveau riche, and they exemplify a varied and rich cross-section of international styles. This chronological reference book follows the early work of the firm, which specialised in an adaptation of the American "shingle" style, through to the exuberant and eclectic style of their work at the turn of the century. Author Samuel G. White has done a magnificent job with informative descriptions of the interactions between the architects and the clients. Jonathan Wallen's interior and exterior photographs are beautiful. Added bonuses are accompanying floor plans and photographs of detailing of fireplaces, woodwork, balustrades, and porticoes. Even for publisher Thames and Hudson, who are renowned for their fabulous books, this is a masterpiece. -- Brian ReinkerRead More
