The National Geographic Desk Reference Book

Geographers, natural scientists, sociologists, environmentalists, explorers (both armchair and ambulant), and cartographers, take note: National Geographic has put out a desk reference, and it's a beaut. The mere heft of it (3.75 lbs.) is inspiring, and the contents more than live up to National Geographic's reputation for quality. It was written by five professors with Ph.D.s in geography and geology, natural sciences, and urban studies, and the text adheres to rigorous scholarly standards, nonetheless speaking to a broad audience. In other words, there's much to by gained by professionals, but it's accessible to those who routinely nodded off during high school earth science, too. The Desk Reference is organized into four parts. "What Is Geography?" takes a look at the history of geography and the history of maps and globes, forming Part I. Part II, "Physical Geography," delves into the structure, composition, formation, dimensions, and tilt of Planet Earth, followed by a lucid discussion of weather, climate patterns, geology, and bioregions. Next comes Part III, "Human Geography," which examines the population, migration, culture, politics, economy, and society throughout the world. And finally there is Part IV, "Places," with 216 pages devoted to summarizing the nations of the world from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, providing relevant statistics and notes on each country's economy, government, transportation, and communications. And these country sketches are followed by 11 superb maps, as well as a glossary. In a time of change that's affecting our climates and populations, environments and national borders, National Geographic's Desk Reference is a welcome source of information, analysis, and perspective. --Stephanie GoldRead More

  • Product Description

This meticulously detailed, invitingly readable reference is nothing less than a vivid portrait of our world, packed with information about the Earth and its peoples -- past and present. Highlighted by 300 illustrations, photographs, maps, charts, and diagrams, and presented in an easy-to-use format, it combines an authoritative text by some of America's most renowned professional geographers with the stunning graphics that have been the National Geographic Society's hallmark for more than a century.

The book presents up-to-the-minute facts and definitive figures on each of the planet's 191 nations, but there's much more. A concise history of geography introduces the greatest cartographers and explorers and chronicles the mapmaker's craft as it developed from speculative art to exacting science. A second fascinating section surveys the physical world: the slow, inexorable processes that create continents and oceans, the ceaseless swirl of weather patterns, the evolution of climates and ecologies, and the impact of humankind. Yet another chapter traces Earth's peoples as small, scattered bands of prehistoric hominids transform into great civilizations.

This reference also delves into the roots of language, religion, culture, and technology to show how human ingenuity and the challenges of nature have interacted for millennia to produce the modem world. Finally, an alphabetical, country-by-country overview presents precise, specific data and statistics on everything from political structure to agricultural and industrial production to ethnic, religious, and linguistic makeup.

Boasting some 80 superb maps and over 200 photographs, diagrams, and charts, along with a comprehensive index, an inclusive glossary, and extensive lists of further resources, this is the ultimate geographic reference from the ultimate authority -- the National Geographic Society.
