The Police and Criminal Evidence Act, 1984 Book

The enactment of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and its accompanying codes of practice wrought fundamental changes to the law of evidence and completely recast the whole of the law on police powers, discipline and complaints. Since the Act came into force a substantial body of case law has built up. This book aims to reflect these developments, and amendments to the Act effected by later enactments, such as the Criminal Justice Act 1988. Important areas where the law has moved on substantially include the exclusion of unfairly obtained evidence, confessions, corroboration, evidence of previous convictions and identification evidence. A new code on the use of tape recording came into force in July 1988 and new versions of the existing codes have been issued. The full text both of the Act and the Codes of Practice is reproduced.Read More
