Product Description
Over a period of three years, Hochschild studied the daily life of working parents inside a Fortune 500 company she calls Amerco. She asks employees "where do you feel appreciated? Where do you feel competent? Where do you feel relaxed?" More often than she expected, the answer came back "at work." From top managers to assembly line workers, the competition between home and work played out in different ways. In addition to paying others to care for the family or doing with less care, one way parents managed the tension between the long hours they work and the time they wanted to give at home, she notes, is by imagining a "potential self" - the self one "would be" if only one had time. The book ends by calling for a movement for a shorter workweek.
