Three Cheers for the Derrys!: A History of the 10th Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in the 1914-18 War Based on the Recollections of the Final Veterans Book
Three Cheers for the Derrys! is more than a regimental history, it is a riveting first hand account by the last veterans of the 10th Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers (Co. Londonderry battalion) who fought with the 36th Ulster Division in the 1914-18 War. Their story follows them from enlisting right through the Somme, Messines, Passchendaele, Cambrai and St. Quentin battles giving a very personal and emotional account of what they had to endure in the trenches on a day-to-day basis. The Derrys were a tightly knit group of young men, who before the war went to the same schools, played on the same streets, visited each other's homes and knew each other's families. Brothers, fathers and sons and many friends enlisted together and this is what makes their story so moving especially in regard to the famous July 1st, 1916 attack on the Somme at Thiepval where the Ulster Division performed with such gallantry, but at the dreadful cost of over 5000 dead and wounded. The author has quite rightly linked the various episodes into chronological order and let these graphic memories run untouched and its harrowing stuff. Belfast Telegraph This second edition is approximately A4 size 240 pages and printed on high-grade paper including 170 photographs. This is essential reading for anyone who has an interest in Ulster history or World War1. The extensive appendices are valuable research tools.Read More
