In the Christian tradition, hymns represent a rich tapestry of popular music with its roots at least as far back as medieval times. There are tunes with ancient origins and words, sometimes with a scriptural foundation and some written more recently, that have formed part of the liturgy perhaps since the first groups of early Christians came together for worship.
