Trevor Huddleston: A Life Book
Trevor Huddleston: A Life is Robin Denniston's biography of the Anglican monk who helped lead the anti-apartheid movement. Huddleston served as bishop in several African countries, and first became famous when Naught For Your Comfort, his book about South Africa under apartheid, was published in 1956. Denniston's biography draws on Huddleston's private archives of letters, speeches and sermons, many of which have not been previously published. More importantly, Denniston clearly articulates the most important fact regarding Huddleston's political activism: the bishop's politics were a function of his theology. "It was from his incarnational perception--that you cannot love an unseen god until you perceive Him in those you are sent to serve--that [Huddleston] concluded that the continual, unremitting assault on human dignity which was apartheid in action was an insult to God, and hence an unforgivable, unforgettable blasphemy", Denniston explains. Such sharp analysis, in the context of a lively narrative, illustrated with striking photographs of Huddleston with people such as Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, makes this biography essential reading for anyone concerned with the anti-apartheid movement, or with the nature of Christian political activism in the 20th century. --Michael Joseph GrossRead More
