Though conspiracy theories are as old as the hills, they have seemingly become a uniquely American commodity--thanks to both their place in popular culture and the fact that there have been some unparalleled humdingers. In this entertaining and ultimately hugely informative book, US comedian Belzer takes a wry and sarcastic look at the big two that have infiltrated American culture to the point of psychosis. After all, says Belzer, If [Kennedy] can die of a frontal head wound inflicted from a sniper shooting from behind, if UFO's can exist in the opinions "of virtually every culture" but not in any official capacity, Elvis might be coming to a location near you. So, what can Belzer provide that thousands of other books can't? Well, no concrete answers, but his format of underlining the lies with the facts and their often laughably logical conclusions is supremely effective, leading you to wonder how such a modern, savvy culture can be so utterly gullible. In this stripped down way, Belzer makes these labyrinthine issues far more palatable, giving scepticism a far more direct outlet. Does Belzer have a point or is this just an extended comedic rant? Certainly, he wants to inspire people to question authority and independently interpret the constant avalanche of media, and here, he makes the process both funny and desirable.
