Chatwin's novel tells the story of Kaspar Utz, one-quarter Jewish, whose obsessive collecting and aesthetic contemplation of Meissen porcelain, is set against the turbulent and traumatic events in Czechoslovakia during this century. Films have been made of two of Bruce Chatwin's books, "The Viceroy of Ouidah" ("Cobra Verde", directed by Werner Herzog) and the eponymous "On the Black Hill". He has also written two other works "The Songlines" and "In Patagonia".
