Walking in the Algarve Book

Although the mild and sunny climate of the Algarve attracts many visitors all the year round, its potential as a walking area is virtually unknown. Cliff-top paths offer breathtaking views over deserted beaches, richly coloured ochre and red cliffs contrast with brilliant blues and greens of the sea and the rock formations are truly amazing with arches, sea-stacks, caves and blowholes. Inland there is a varied landscape. Most of the walks are far removed from popular tourist areas and allow observations of the old traditional way of life which still continues unchanged in the more remote areas. People met in the countryside are without exception friendly and welcoming and there are no access problems. Cork oaks, pines, eucalyptus and chestnuts grow in the hills. Wild flowers are abundant and the area is rich in birdlife. The mild winters make the Algarve an ideal winter destination for British and other north European walkers. In summer the hot sun is tempered by Atlantic breezes so that only July and August should be ruled out as too hot.Read More
