Wrestling with Giants: Stories of Hope and Faith for All Those Who Struggle (Hodder Christian books) Book

The subtitle of this slim volume sums it up: "Stories of hope and faith for all who struggle." Written by Anglican Evangelical clergyman John Young, Wrestling With Giants tells five stories of ordinary Christians who have learned how to live with serious long-term suffering like the disability of their child, depression and cancer. Young has tacked on to the back of each real-life story some prayers, devotional material and questions which give the stories a bit more value. The book is based on recorded conversations and the personal stories are simply told from the heart. They illustrate well how Christian faith can help people cope with terrible suffering. They will undoubtedly support and inspire some Christians who are in need of help. For those who are unbelievers, or whose faith is more tentative, however, the ultimate triumph of these stories may seem daunting. The book is also disadvantaged because all five stories come from the same extended community in the North of England, and from the same rather narrow perspective of Evangelical Anglicanism. A wider range of contributors would have improved it. --Dwight LongeneckerRead More
