XML: A Manager's Guide (Information Technology) Book

This introduction explains the essence of XML without trying to be a developer's handbook. In just 200 pages, it provides a high-level overview together with enough detail for those planning how to use XML, or who need to communicate with developers who are implementing XML solutions. As the title suggests, this is the ideal book for managers and executives who need to understand what XML is all about, as well for developers who need to grasp the concepts before diving into the detail. The author explains that XML is about exchanging information. There is a chapter on how XML documents are structured, followed by a section on related standards such as Namespaces, XSL (Extensible Stylesheet Language), and XML Schema. The different kinds of XML tools are described, but without specifically covering any particular product. The second half of the book is devoted to real-world business issues such as what sort of team you need to assemble to undertake an XML project. Five types of XML applications for enterprises are described. For example, the knowledge management type covers product planning and technical support, while the workflow type covers purchasing and processing of expenses. Finally, there is a look at XML from the perspective of a software vendor, providing personalised Web sites or automated upgrades. A glossary and index completes the book. Although short, XML for Managers is a considerable achievement. The author is extremely well informed, and his writing is underpinned by solid technical know-how. The book also benefits from clear layout with regular executive summaries, diagrams and marginal notes. --Tim AndersonRead More
