Is it a bird? Is it a penguin in tennis shoes? It's almost certainly not Superman anyway. Whatever type of creature the eponymous guest might be, turning up uninvited and most definitely unwanted one dark and blustery night, he is most assuredly to be commended for his absolute determination not to take a hint. Despite the obvious indignation of the stuffy Victorian inhabitants of the abode he chooses to make his own (after all, who could tolerate with a smile a guest with a tendency to lick the walls and hide the soup tureen?), the guest stays purposelessly in situ for seventeen years. Told in witty rhyming couplets together with subversive gothic illustrations, The Doubtful Guest is yet another example of the genius of Edward Gorey and I would recommend that anyone and everyone should start reading his books at the earliest opportunity. However, anyone who does find this book to be something of which they grow fond, best be careful not to following the Guest"s example and drop it in the pond.

When i first bought this book i was unsure how to take it with the blurb stating an adventure story but i must say i was pleasantly surprised, this book has great twists round each corner, you can almost picture the special effects of a film. This book was exciting and i struggled to put it down. I can't wait for the next installment in the series. Maybe we have our potter for grown ups

How to Cook Children: A Grisly Recipe Book

I picked up this little treasure for my youngest son but have had to wrestle it out the hands of my 15 year old every night (and getting him read is no mean feat I can tell you). He sit and sniggers in the corner of the room for ages, occasionally quoting his favorite parts to us. This book is a breath of fresh air, beautifully illustrated and superbly written. Every character has a plethora of laugh out loud moments. I adore it!

This is a great book. I'm a student and it makes it a lot easier to find what I need to know. Working with dB and finding standards are what I use it for most.

Despite being a self-proclaimed 'pornographic work', 'The Curious Sofa' is a surprisingly subtle and, considering it comes from the brain of Edward Gorey, unsurprisingly amusing yarn. Darkly whimsical in tone and, although certainly not explicit, concerning a slightly more adult subject matter than the rest of Gorey's work, 'The Curious Sofa' follows the adventures of a particularly open-minded young lady called Alice and alludes to all manner of compromising situations, ranging from a romp with a sheepdog to an encounter with a married couple who both have wooden legs. Another witty tale complete with fabulous illustrations.

The War of Ecteur - The Key of Ecteur

True to what the cover says this book really is an adventure story, this book follows three groups of people who come together in an almighty clash, some good and others bad. Not only does this book have an adventure but it's magical and fascinating. I enjoyed it from the start and found it very exciting. What a surprising but enjoyable ending. I can't wait for the next installment in the series, maybe we have the Harry Potter for the grown ups with this book.
